Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley go without saying.

I wonder if any of these more current dead singers will ever live up to the legends of Elvis, John Lennon, George Harrison, Buddy Holly...?

Kurt Cobain! Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Jim Morrison, & Janis Joplin.

It's not their job to live up to any legend that came before them. Every one of them is a legend in his/her own right.
I did forget Selena! & Johnny Cash, Layne Staley & of course Elvis.

Of course we can't forget Bon Scot!

There are so so many singers in rebetika I could choose here, but I guess I'll go with the most famous ones. Definitely Markos Vamvakaris, Stratos Pagioumtzis, Anestis Delias, Giorgos Batis, Vasillis Tsitsanis, Sotiria Bellou, Rita Abatzi and rosa Eskenazi. Vamvakaris and Tsitsanis especially. You can't listen to Greek music, even today's stuff, without knowing who they are or at least some of their songs, even if you only know cover versions. Fragosyriani and Synefiasmeni Kyriaki come to mind immediately. These two singers and musicians pretty much brought the bouzouki from the underworld into the mainstream. Stratos was all over the place, singing with everyone,, even into his later years. Batis and Delias didn't sing much but all of their songs are legends. The women were true divas of their time.

Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison and Bon Scott. They were already mentioned, but they are all so good! Oh, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Well, I guess he's not really a legend to most people, but he should be, his guitar playing is amazing!

Two goddesses of song in my book are Ella Fitzgerald, and Patsy Cline!

I was just listening to a live recording on Youtube of Patsy's Lovesick Blues. Amazing vocal control, that woman has! Live recordings prove talent or not. Finding recordings of her which are new to me was a gift.

I think that Luther Vandross and Freddie Mercury should be mentioned here

Damn, how did I forget about Patsy Cline? Everything you said is so true, she was truly unique in the era she lived in.

Ritchie Valen who sang Donna and Labomba in the 1950's. If he had lived, I think he would have come up with more great songs.
